Boards and Commissions
General Information
Members of boards and commissions provide an invaluable service to our city. They advise the City Council and City staff on a wide variety of subjects by making recommendations on important policy matters. Over the years, the services and programs provided by the City have expanded. Without the assistance of the various boards and commissions, the City Council could give many complex and significant matters only a limited review. The detailed studies and considered advice of boards and commissions are often catalysts for innovative programs and improved services. Serving on a board or commission can be a rewarding experience for community service-minded residents. It is an excellent way to participate in the functioning of local government and to make a personal contribution to the improvement of our community. Making local government effective and responsive is everybody’s responsibility.

Types of Committees
There are five distinct types of committees. These are standing committees to the City Council, ad hoc committees, intergovernmental committees, department advisory committees and committees created by the Eugene Charter. These committees originate from different sources: the city code, council action, state statute, intergovernmental agreements, and the Eugene Charter.

The City of Eugene Advisory Groups Member and Staff Manual details the selection and recruitment process and defines boards and commission members’ roles, relationships and responsibilities, including general information about meeting management, ethics and accountability, and communication.

CITY SEEKS APPLICANT FOR
WHILAMUT NATURAL AREA CITIZEN PLANNING COMMITTEE

One-Year Position Open for Citizen Planning Committee for the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park

Due to a recent resignation, one position on the CPC is open for a one-year term, ending June 30, 2014. Successful applicants will be eligible to reapply for a full three-year term in 2014.

The CPC is an intergovernmental committee formed to develop and monitor implementation of the East Alton Baker Park Plan, in consultation with Willamalane Park and Recreation District and the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division. In 2002, at the initiation of the CPC, the entirety of the 237-acre East Alton Baker Park was renamed the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park. There are 15 members; 10 appointed by the Eugene City Council; five by the Willamalane Park and Recreation District Board. The current focus is monitoring agency-initiated restoration and park improvement activities, monitoring other projects which may impact the Whilamut Natural Area - in particular the I-5/Willamette River bridge project - and promoting the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park as a valuable natural and cultural resource for the entire community.

Applicants should have demonstrated an interest in maintaining and enhancing the passive recreational qualities of the Whilamut Natural Area.

The deadline to apply for this position is May 17. For more information about the Whilamut DAC, visit Whilamut Natural Area Citizen Planning Committee or call 541-682-4906.
